Send a Twitter DM using Orbit
With Orbit, you can directly send individual Twitter DMs to a single or multiple members of your community. Why is this helpful?
- It’s a great way to say hello to folks that you see pop up in your Orbit Activity Feed
- It saves you time when you need to reach out to multiple folks for whom you have the same ask (like personally inviting them to an event, asking them for product feedback, etc)
- When sent via Orbit, it lets you track who you and your team have engaged with, which is good context to have when reaching out to a member
In this doc, we will explain how to:
- send an individual Twitter DM from a member’s profile
- send a one-time bulk Twitter DM to members
- automatically send a Twitter DM

Setup
First, you’ll need to connect the Orbit Twitter DMs Integration. This doc will help you get set up:
Individually DM a member from their profile
If you want to send an individual DM, go to a member’s profile, do the following:
- Click “Message”, and then click “Twitter DM”.
- This will open a modal where you can type your message. Select the Twitter account that you want to send your DM from. Then, type your message. When you’re done, click Send.
- Once you’ve sent it, you’ll see it appear underneath the Actions tab on this Member’s profile, along with its send status.
- If your message has not succeeded, click the banner at the top right of the page. It will take you to a log page where you can learn more.
Individually DM multiple members in your community
If you want to send a bulk DM, do the following:
- Go to the Member’s table and use the filters to narrow down your audience.
- Select all member matching these filters, then click “Actions” > “Send Twitter DMs”.
- This will open a modal. Select the account you want to use to send your Twitter DM. Then write your message in the compose box.
- Press Send and you’re done! If you’d like to view the status of your message, click the banner on the upper right of your screen, and it will take you to a log that tells you more. You can view the status of your message send by going to Settings -> Actions Log.
Automatically send Twitter DMs
In some cases, you might want to set up an automatic Twitter DM (for example, if you wanted to thank anyone who mentioned your company on Twitter)
To do so, you can do the following:
- Go to Workflows
- Click Send Twitter DM from the Start a Workflow list of options.
- In Step 1, select the filters that a member needs to match in order to receive your Twitter DM.
- In Step 2, compose the message you’d like to send.
- Note: if you haven’t used Twitter DMs on Orbit before, you’ll have to set up that integration first. You can follow along here: Twitter DMs integration
- Click Run Workflow and you’re done! Now, anyone that meets your filter criteria will receive a Twitter DM from your Twitter account.

FAQs
The error message on the logs page says “Username is not valid”. What should I do?
This means that this member’s Twitter handle is not correct. It’s possible that they recently changed their Twitter handle. We suggest searching them up on Twitter, finding their new username, updating it on their profile, and then trying again.
The error message says on the logs page “You cannot send messages to this user”. What should I do?
This likely means that this member does not have public DMs open. In this case, we suggest you respect their privacy settings and not setting them a Twitter DM. If you know them personally though, you can follow them on Twitter and wait for them to follow you back in order to be able to DM them.
Is there a limit to the number of Twitter DMs I can send a day?
Yes - you can send at most 200 Twitter DMs per day. We strongly discourage sending more than that because it could be viewed as spam by your members.
Someone told me they don’t want to receive DMs from me in the future. How do I make sure I don’t send them a DM in the future?
We suggest adding a tag to their profile called “Do Not DM - Twitter”. Then in the future, when you filter for members to message, make sure you filter out anyone with this tag.
The send button looks disabled even though my message is longer than 20 characters. Why?
If this happens, just click outside of the text box and the Send button should refresh to be enabled.
