Twitter keywords integration
Our Twitter integration allows you to track mentions and new follower activities but sometimes you want to understand more about what is happening on Twitter outside of people interacting with your account. For example, other activities on Twitter that are valuable for community building are:
- Users sharing content you produce
- Users mentioning your company name without using your @
- Users sharing your GitHub repositories or other links related to your org
OurΒ Twitter KeywordsΒ integration allows you to capture these kinds of activities by allowing you to configure up to 5 keyword or queries to check for.
This integration will create new members and activities for every single match of a keyword or query you specify. If your keywords or queries are too generic or incorrectly set up, you may add thousands of new members very quickly so be specific about what you set up.
If you want to look for Tweets that @ mention your account on Twitter, you do not need to use Twitter Keywords for this. Our Twitter integration offers this by default and is available on all price plans.
Set up Twitter Keywords on your Workspace
Head to the Integrations section of your Workspace'sΒ Settings page. There you will see all of the integrations available for you to add. Twitter Keywords is one of our Growth integrations so you may need to upgrade your existing plan in order to use it.

The Twitter Keywords integration on the integrations page
Click onΒ Twitter KeywordsΒ to begin the setup process. A pop up will appear asking you to confirm that you are currently logged into the correct Twitter account. Take a moment to check that you are either completely logged out of Twitter, or that you are logged into the account that you want to use with Orbit.

If youΒ have notΒ added any Twitter integrations to your Workspace previously, you will be taken to Twitter to authorize access.
If youΒ haveΒ previously added the Twitter integration to your Orbit workspace, you will see this instead:

ClickΒ ConnectΒ and the Twitter Keywords integration will be added to your Workspace.
Set up your keywords and queries
Once the integration is connected to your account you will be taken to the settings page where you can input the keywords and queries that you want Orbit to look for.

You are able to set up 5 keywords or queries per account.
Choosing good keywords and queries
This integration is built on top ofΒ Twitter's Advanced SearchΒ capability. Anything you can do with Advanced Search, you can do with this integration. This can be as basic as a specific keyword like the name of your company, or a complex query that looks for Tweets that mention a specific hashtag that also contain links.
β
Good Example: Matching tweets that contain a specific URL
If you want to make sure you're capturing Tweets that contain references to URLs on your website, you can do that using a query like this:

Good Example: Match Tweets containing #orbitmodel with specific number of replies, likes and retweets
Capturing every single tweet that contains as hashtag might not be very valuable to you. Perhaps you only want to capture a Tweet if the engagement around it is good.Β You can do that by specifying minimum numbers of replies, likes and/or retweets that a Tweet should have before it gets added to Orbit.

The above query translates toΒ "Match any tweet using the hashtag #orbitmodel that has a minimum of 5 replies, 5 favourites and 5 retweets".
β
Good Example: Exclude specific words from matching
Sometimes the keywords you want to use are also used by other companies or conversations completely unrelated to you. You can avoid this additional noise by excluding certain words in your query, meaning that the Tweet won't be captured if they are present.

The example above matches Tweets that talk about our Nexus customer conference and contain our URL. We exclude anything that contains "Fortnite" as this appears to also be used a lot along with the keywords Orbit and Nexus.
β
Bad Example:A general keyword that will cause you problems
Generic and broad keywords run the risk of capturing enormous amounts of data, all of which will add new members and activities to your workspace. A keyword like the one below is not recommended.

Testing your Keywords and Queries
We highly recommend that you test your keywords and queries before adding them to Orbit so you can be sure that you're getting relevant members and activities based on what you want to achieve.
There is a Preview tool available on the Twitter Keywords settings page, please use this to check what the results of your chosen keywords or queries will be and fine tune them to get what you want.

You can also test your keywords or queries viaΒ Twitter Advanced Search.
Broad Query Warnings
As an additional layer of protection we also check each keyword or query that you specify to ensure that they aren't going to import thousands of new members. If this is the case you may see the following warning:

If you believe that your chosen keyword or query is not going to cause problems in your workspace, you can let us know viaΒ [email protected].
Historical Import
The Twitter Keywords integration will import up to 400 previous tweets from the last 7 days that match all of your specified keywords or queries. This means that if you have 4 queries specified, up to 100 previous Tweets per query will be imported.
If you modify, or add a new keyword or query at any point, a new import of up to 400 Tweets will be performed once again.
The 7 day historical limit is imposed by theΒ Twitter API.
Turning off a keyword or query
You can turn off any keyword or query by deleting it from the settings and re-saving the list of keywords and queries. Any members or activities that were added by the previous query will not be removed from your workspace.
Removing the Twitter Keywords integration
To remove the Twitter Keywords integration, click on Twitter Keywords on the integrations page to enter the settings and find the Actions section. You can remove the integration by clickingΒ Remove.

Removing Twitter Keywords will not remove your Twitter integration but it will stop any keyword or query searching from being performed.
If you need help
Accidents happen, right? If you find yourself in need of support to remove data that has been imported erroneously by mis-configuration of this integration, please contactΒ [email protected]. Additionally, if you would like to be sure that your chosen keywords or queries are good to use, you can send them to us and we'll check them for you.
